What began as a two man operation several years ago, Energy Curtailment Specialists, Inc. (ECS) has evolved into the largest demand response provider in the United States. For the past several years ECS has focused their attention on the State of New York where demand response programs have become very popular and have helped the State avoid widespread blackouts. Though its focus has long been on New York, the company itself interestingly enough arose as a direct response to the California blackouts earlier this decade. Recognizing that such havoc and chaos would certainly not translate well into New York State and in particular New York City, the two principals in the company, Glen Smith and Stephen Lynch, began growing their operation. Along the way more than 1,300 customers have joined forces to reduce 500 MW of power from the grid each and every time an emergency-level crisis occurs in the State of New York. This is enough electricity to power 500,000 homes.
Though the concept of demand response programs have been in existence for quite some time in California, they have not been very popular to date. The programs have been primarily administered by the utilities. Recently, the State has become more serious with the concept of demand response. The Governor’s office has itself designated demand response as one of the first elements necessary for a successful energy policy. It is understood by all that in order to avoid continuing widespread problems with blackouts and brownouts in the State of California, there will have to be a wholehearted attempt at serious demand response. ECS, as the largest demand response provider, has been behind the push towards opening up these programs in California to independent companies called Aggregators. ECS is an aggregator approved to operate as such within the State of California and for the various utilities in the State.
ECS is considered the leader in its field and respected by others in the industry. We look forward to bringing true demand response to California and bringing significant revenues and energy savings to the doors of California businesses. Over the past five years alone, ECS has paid more than $35 million to participants in its programs
