Energy Curtailment Specialists Emerges in New Market
Buffalo, New York, Jan. 3
The need for demand response participants has arisen once again in the PJM territory and Buffalo-based Energy Curtailment Specialists, Inc. (ECS), the largest privately held demand response provider in the country, is pleased to announce their entrance into this market.
ECS’ program is a best-efforts, no penalty program in which participants are paid for reducing electricity when the grid is unstable. Participants receive advanced notification from ECS when the grid is forecast to be unstable, allowing businesses to form a reduction plan and notify staff of the curtailment event.
“Our program is unique because it is a more convenient and hassle-free approach to demand response compared to others,” said Glen Smith, co-founder, president, and chief executive officer of ECS. “We allow our customers the freedom to decide what and how much they want to curtail.”
Long before a call for a reduction is ever made, ECS will provide the business with insight as to what loads yield the most reduction, as well as provide a demand response audit at the facility as needed or requested by the participant, at no additional cost.
Some ways businesses participate include shutting down production lines, turning down public area and office lights, reducing cooling in some areas of the facility and turning off non-critical equipment. Some facilities also decide to transfer the load to an emergency generator, for which ECS will reimburse businesses for the fuel used while running a generator.
In order to measure data used during an event, ECS will install interval metering at the facility free of charge. With no monthly service, data hosting or maintenance charges associated with the meter, it provides data that the business can utilize to more effectively manage the facility’s energy usage.
